Formalities
An international passport required (valid at least 6 months after the date of arrival) for adults and children. You also need a visa (valid for 3 or 6 months) to be obtained online via https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/, or upon arrival in Tanzania at the airport or at the border. Cost on site: USD 50 per person payable by credit card. As a precaution, carry USD 50 or EUR 40 in cash in case the credit card terminal does not work. Prices are subject to change.
Health
Anyone traveling to Africa, regardless of the duration and circumstances of the trip, should protect themselves against hepatitis A and B. It is also strongly advised to get vaccinated against typhoid fever and to update vaccines for polio, tetanus, and diphtheria. Anyone traveling to Tanzania is required to have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate upon arrival if, in the week before arriving in Tanzania, they visited a region affected by yellow fever. Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate all year round.
Local Currency
The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling: 1,000 TZS = approximately €0.39 (as of September 2023). US dollars and euros are almost universally accepted (except for US dollar bills dated before 2006). Most hotels accept credit cards such as Mastercard and Visa. American Express is not commonly accepted. Please note: in lodges, a deposit often has to be paid by credit card. Since the connection is not always strong, withdrawing cash or paying by credit card can sometimes be impossible. Therefore, make sure to carry enough cash.
Language
On Zanzibar, English is the lingua franca. Swahili is the official language and is spoken by the majority of the population. However, almost every tribe has its own dialect. Hotels will serve you in English without any problems.
Cuisine
Zanzibar is nicknamed ‘the Spice Island’. It is therefore not surprising that many spices are used in the local cuisine.
