eco sustainable tourism

At The Mora, sustainability isn’t a trend — it’s a way of life. Nestled on the pristine shores of Zanzibar, our boutique hotel is designed to offer guests an amazing experience while actively protecting the island’s rich cultural heritage and delicate ecosystem. Through eco-friendly practices, renewable energy sources, and community partnerships, The Mora is redefining what it means to be a luxury eco hotel in East Africa.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

From its inception, The Mora was built with a deep respect for environmental sustainability. Every detail — from architecture to daily operations — reflects our dedication to minimizing our environmental impact and preserving Zanzibar’s natural beauty.

Natural and Recycled Materials

The Mora was constructed using natural materials sourced locally, such as coral stone and reclaimed wood. We integrate recycled materials into our furniture and décor to reduce waste and promote circular design.

Solar Energy & Energy Efficiency

Our property is powered in large part by solar panels, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. We use energy-efficient lighting and appliances, and intelligent air conditioning systems that adjust based on room occupancy and temperature.

Sustainable Water and Waste Management

Water is a precious resource on an island. At The Mora, we’ve implemented grey water systems for irrigation and reduced single-use plastics by sourcing all our resort water from our on-site water plantation.

Organic Waste & Composting

All organic waste is composted and used in our garden, contributing to a closed-loop system. We work with local farms to reduce food miles and enhance our sustainable waste management approach.

Cultural Heritage & Community Engagement

We believe sustainable tourism includes nurturing the social fabric of Zanzibar.

Supporting Local Artisans

We support the local community by offering artisan-made items in our on-site boutiques and at our weekly Masaii market held every Wednesday.

Guided Cultural Experiences

From Spice Tours at nearby Spice Farms to storytelling evenings about Zanzibar’s rich history, guests connect with the island on a deeper level — including its famous tales of Ian Fleming, and local legends like Aboud Jumbe.

Protecting Natural Ecosystems

Zanzibar is home to coral reefs, reef fish species, and endangered species that require urgent conservation efforts. We support reef-safe swimming and excursions in No-Take Zones such as the Coral Reef Sanctuary near Chumbe Island Coral Park.

Carbon Neutral Stays

Our long-term goal is to become carbon neutral. We currently offset part of our carbon footprint through partnerships with local Forest Reserves and sustainability organizations.

Guest Experience Meets Eco-Experience

Luxury and sustainability go hand in hand at The Mora. Guests enjoy a seamless blend of comfort, culture, and conservation. Whether it’s a sunset dhow sail, a cooking class with local ingredients, or a nature walk led by environmental guides — every moment is part of an immersive eco experience.

Leading the Future of Green Hospitality in Zanzibar

As a Travelife-certified eco-friendly hotel, The Mora works closely with tourism stakeholders, the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, and international sustainability experts to help shape the future of the tourism industry in Zanzibar.

We’re proud to be part of a global movement — inspiring change, protecting ecosystems, and creating lasting, responsible memories for every traveler.
